A month ago, I bought 12 Rules for Life by Jordan B. Peterson. I found it in a jewerly/spiritual/lifestyle store and decided that it's time to read it for myself, after watching videos of Jordan on YouTube the last few years.
As I have watched videos of Jordan online I have gotten humbled in my experience of the English language, and my knowledge and understanding of history. My first impressions of the book deterred me for the same reasons, but I decided I would get through it even if it was a challenging read.
The Road to Sophisticated Scholar, Genius, Smart guy....
In the last six months I have started reading regularly in a way that I have never really done before. Previously I have looked at reading as something very challenging because of boredom and lack of focus. And have not really applied the discipline to do it anyway. But that has fortunately changed!
I usually took some time to read the book after breakfast or before bed, and also found I enjoy reading on train rides. And slowly but surely I got through the chapters and rules for life.
After reading the first chapter I decided to start noting down and circling my favourite parts, quotes and stories in the book, and there are plenty of them!
One of my favorite Quotes is from the last part of the book, and comes from a question Jordan asked himself.
"What should I do with my life?
Aim for paradise, and concentrate on today"
There is a lot of stories, personal and historical with ideas that can be practiced to improve the current situation of life. But for me to get a worthy understanding of the book, I will have to go through it again in a few weeks. I believe when things will be more familiar that they will stick easier.
Go Get Some Feel-Good, By Finishing a Book
The whole point of this post was to talk about the feeling I got when I finished this book, and any other book. A feeling of "Oh I actually did it, good job man" that seems to bring me a boost of confidence in myself. This is probably because I acknowledge a certain degree of discipline was present to read a book from start to finish in a few weeks (I have not read a lot of books in my lifetime).
So, if you are looking for some feel-good sensations, or some proof of discipline - Read a book! Any book really, preferably one you find interesting. And if you like the idea of stories, wisdom and life tips I recommend reading 12 Rules for Life!
