Embrace the Art of Lagom: Achieve Perfect Balance in Your Life
Today we’re diving into a Swedish concept that could transform your life: Lagom. This idea centers around finding the perfect balance, achieving harmony in every aspect of life.
In a world often dominated by extreme self-improvement advice, I believe Lagom offers a refreshing, sustainable approach to personal growth.
What is Lagom?
Lagom is a unique Swedish word that translates to “just the right amount.” It’s about achieving balance and moderation rather than falling into extremes of excess or deprivation.
Imagine it as the sweet spot between too much and too little. The meaning of Lagom is well known in Sweden and I hope that it will make its way to other places from here.
Now that you understand what Lagom means, we will be going through five fundamental steps to living a Lagom lifestyle.
1. Simplify Your Space
One of the first steps to living a Lagom lifestyle is to simplify your space. Declutter your home, work and digital environment. Keep only what you truly need and cherish, and get rid of distractions that serves no purpose. Balanced living is the result of finding joy in moderation.
A tidy space can lead to a clearer mind and more focus. This doesn’t mean you have to embrace minimalism, it’s about creating a space that feels calm and functional for you.
2. Balance Your Work and Leisure
Finding a balance between work and leisure is crucial. Set clear boundaries for your work hours and make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Experiencing both comfort, and challenge within our work and leisure lives is a good step to progress.
Lagom is about creating a rhythm that feels right for you, avoiding both overworking and underworking.
3. Practice Mindful Eating
When it comes to food, practice mindful eating. Enjoy your meals without rushing. Pay attention to portion sizes and savor the flavors. Lagom isn’t about dieting or restriction, it’s about appreciating food, and everything else in moderation.
We should allow ourselves to enjoy what we like sometimes, we have a limited amount of time on earth after all. But even what we enjoy loses its value when in excess. So enjoy in moderation.
4. Create a Balanced Routine
Develop a daily routine that includes a mix of work, exercise, relaxation, and social activities. Balance is key to maintaining your well-being, and what works for you may be different for someone else.
Make sure your routine supports both productivity and relaxation, and adjust as needed to fit your lifestyle. It's important to both challenge ourselves, and take time to relax to feel fulfilled.
As in all other aspects, strive for moderation. The sweet spot. That means to challenge yourself and be uncomfortable once in a while. Then enjoying your favourite things in life will be even more rewarding.
5. Cultivate Meaningful Relationships
Invest in meaningful relationships by spending quality time with family and friends. Balance your social life with time for yourself, this is very important for our well being. Humans thrive when they have meaningful relationships with other people in life.
To socialize is an important investment of our time, that gives back plentiful. Lagom encourages us to have fulfilling connections without overextending ourselves. So set aside time for both friends and yourself.
